GUERNSEY - Channel Islands

21/11/05
Our first taste of the Channel Islands – a day trip to Guernsey as foot passengers on board a Condor Ferry from Weymouth. With a typically early start, we set off on a cold and overcast day, to find that the wind blast on the open deck of the stern of a fast-cat can literally take your breath away when mid-channel. St Peter Port, the capital town of the Isle of Guernsey was reached a shade over two hours later. It was also very out of season and the plan to visit Castle Cornet was quickly blown out – it was closed for the winter… We strolled the port and shopping streets and cafes but fortunately we did not have many hours ashore otherwise this could have been a really disastrous day.

This was an early trip in our travels and it taught us an important lesson in planning and keeping our options open. We should have planned alternatives and taken a bus to reach other parts of the island
